Student Performing Arts Center

The Student Performing Arts Series brings in school children during the year to experience live performances and
to participate on stage. There are free workshops and performances for the students, which teach various skills
that are both educational and entertaining. Students learn that within the discipline of theatre arts there is a lot of
fun. The majority of students have started with no stage experience, and several have since gone on to pursue
theater as college undergraduates. The yearly budget for this program is $99,000

The mission of The Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts is to enrich the cultural lives of community members
and visitors by presenting the finest in performing arts. Located in southeastern New Mexico, The Spencer Theater,
founded by Jackie and Dr. A. N. Spencer, opened in October 1977. In a traditional, intimate auditorium with 514
seats, the theater presents music, dance and theatre. The Spencer Theater also has a strong educational outreach
program for schools. The major components are: a performing arts series for schools, entitled “Class Acts,”
“Student Performing Arts Series,” artists visiting schools, internship program, school tours and drama class
Last year there were 30 major performances at the Spencer (16 concert events, 6 touring Broadway shows, 3
dance productions, 2 comedies, 2 classical and an opera).
