YMCA Residential Camp, Sheridan, Wyoming

This campaign addresses a long-term strategic plan to add a resident camping component to the Sheridan County
YMCA’s programming arsenal. The campaign includes purchase and lease acquisition, facility improvements,
equipment purchase, start-up costs and a site master plan. The total campaign budget includes an endowment
component for camp scholarships for both Johnson County and Sheridan County.

The Sheridan County YMCA has demonstrated its ability to impact young people and families through its longstanding
Day Camp program initiated when the YMCA began in 1959. Despite the success of these day camp
experiences (now entitled Camp Thunderbird), the program has been ham strung by the absence of a facility
where it could offer resident camp experiences.
Camp Thunderbird has been full with a waiting list for the last decade. This summer over 250 young people
participated in Camp Thunderbird but more than 40 were left behind. In addition, Y staff has long recognized the
need to support adolescents and families in our community who are hungry for the direction and meaning that a
YMCA camping program could provide but has been unable to accommodate a program that would serve these
needs well.
